A pictorial Glossary of anomalous photographs. HMPS is not saying these are evidence of the paranormal. I am offering them as examples of phenomena that can be captured on film, digital or video. Explanations accompany the description where I had them to offer. New additions are added where most appropriate so there may be new pictures not at the top. Scroll down, enjoy, and use the comment form on the contact us page if you have any feedback for us!

Now: Let's go!

This picture was submitted by Liz, co-founder of PPI Ladies who are linked on our links page. Liz says that although this picture is now all over the internet it was sent to her by a friend.

This is a picture shared with us by Twisted Sisters Paranormal group (linked on our links page) It is one of their rooms being renovated. This is the *before* Picture:

Twisted Sisters submitted this *after* picture to show what a photograph of dust orbs look like. They are linked on our links page.

This fascinating Fake Positive is the sun  shining through the peep hole in a door and was sent in to us by Twisted Sisters Paranormal. They are linked on our LINKS page. Picture is copy right Twisted Sisters.

I'm not quite sure what this is. It had been raining but was stopped, it was cool but not cold, in the 50 degree range and it was definitely moist outside. I was alone and no one had been smoking when I snapped this shot of the creek behind my house and caught this interesting anomaly. I don't say it's paranormal, but it is different.

This is a classic ORB picture. It was taken in March 2005 at Jefferson Barrack's National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missiuri. It was raining. This is why any picture taken when it is raining can not be taken seriously as anomalous.

Duh. Reflection of flash, of course.

This was taken in 2004 at Magnolia Manor in Bolivar Tennessee. It is a classic light blur. This effect is caused by using the "night shot " feature on a digital camera and not using a tripod or solid surface. The slightest movement will distort the light even if the light is very slight or far away. Pictures taken using night shot without a tripod can be discounted as evidence of anomalous phenomena.

This red mist on the balcony has been said to be a reflection of the sun shining through the red stripe on the flag. Here is a close up:This was taken at The Parlour B&B in Ironton, Missouri. I could not reproduce this effect. Here is a picture of  the Innkeeper, owner Jeanette Schrum standing on the balcony at the location the mist was seen to contrast. (To be added-- I have to find the disc.)

This is a low laying ground fog that crept across the battlefield in Shiloh, Tennessee at sunset. I have a series of 9 pictures that show it moving in. The effect is naturally occurring but I have to tell you that as the gloaming turned the daylight to dusk and this fog thickened and moved across the land it was easy to imagine lines of soldiers marching to their deaths in this bloody civil war encounter.

This is fireworks smoke. Taken during a local fireworks display. The picture is unchanged. Yes there is an image in the smoke, but this is not an anomalous figure because it is a naturally occurring anomaly. This was taken in Grassy, Missouri.

This is a close up of the "figure" in the fireworks smoke. Is this what ITC consists of? Thats a discussion I would love to have with an informed source. Some people see a skull. I see a female figure looking over her right shoulder. The face (if not the features)and right arm are very clearly defined. You can see what appears to be the crossing straps of a top and a halo of white blond hair.

This picture piques my interests because of a local legend about the ghost of a teen aged girl who was killed racing home to beat a curfew that some times is seen on the roadway or on the property. Is it paranormal? No. Its fireworks smoke!

This is a picture taken in high humidity. I had wiped the lens but it was 99% humidity and over 100 degrees. This picture shows you how excessive heat and humidity can manifest in a photograph as a covering kind of mist. This was taken  in Glen Allen, Missouri.

This is an example of a reflection picture. This was taken from inside the car. The seeming apparition is a reflection of something inside the car. The light aberration on the left shows what happens when you take the picture in the direction of the sun or a direct light. This is Alton, Illinois.

Fireworks colored smoke.

Stay tuned. I will be adding pictures of water spots, sunspots, dust orbs, pet dander, light streaks, light anomalies, moisture, snow, pollen, mist, vortex, cigarette's smoke, camp fire smoke and one unexplainable light ball.
